Hughes

PPC

Objectives

Hughes, a family-owned electrical goods retailer based in East Anglia, faced several marketing challenges. They had super strong brand awareness in their home region, but limited recognition across the rest of the UK. Outside East Anglia sales were primarily price-driven, rather than brand or service-driven.

Hughes wanted to highlight their unique selling points as a family business with competitive prices and exceptional delivery and installation services. They needed a strategy to expand awareness in regions where they could provide the best customer experience, making the most of limited budgets compared to larger competitors - so that’s exactly what we did.

How Did We Do It?

We created a comprehensive location-specific strategy, to maximise the impact of Hughes' marketing activity:

Regional Segmentation
  • We split the UK into distinct sectors based on Hughes' market presence and service capabilities, so that we could create tailored strategies and budgets for each region
  • We implemented precise postcode/location targeting across all campaigns to optimise for regional KPIs
Advanced Campaign Structure
  • We built Performance Max (PMax) campaigns, segmented by margin, and this enabled us to control budget allocation based on potential profit per item
  • We used custom labels in the product feed, generated from price and COGS data, to manage bidding strategy
  • We used AI to optimise our campaigns, and balanced this with human, strategic control for any outliers

Expanded Search Presence

  • We rolled out a full portfolio of generic search campaigns, segmented by product type
  • We added Dynamic Search Ads to fill gaps and spot any new opportunities
Consolidated Marketing Approach
  • We took over management of all PPC activity previously handled by multiple agencies and created a unified strategy with consistent messaging and optimisation
